Fees
Application costs vary considerably. An average preparation fee
for a utility patent application might be about $4500, with Patent
Office utility application filing fees totaling $500 (for an
independent inventor), drawings costing $300, and a reasonably thorough
search costing $750, for a total of $6050. However, the preparation fee
may vary between $2000 and $10,000 depending on the complexity of your
invention and the quality of the description you provide, and drawing
and search fees may sometimes be delayed, reduced, or omitted. A design
patent application usually costs between $1000 and $1600 as filed. A
federal trademark application with a full search usually costs about $1000.
I charge a fixed fee for work that is reasonably predictable and an
hourly rate for work that is not predictable. I will quote you a fixed
fee for preparing your patent application after I have reviewed your
disclosure. Below is a sample of typical fees, excluding USPTO fees
and out-of-pocket expenses. Please contact
me for a complete and current fee schedule. Fees shown below are
subject to change without notice.
